Membership Opportunities

2026 Opportunities

CDL membership opportunities typically begin in the fall semester. We are not currently hiring, but please read below to learn about how to get involved.

Upcoming deadlines
Connected Minds postdoctoral fellowship (due 3/27)

Community members (not academically affiliated)

If you are a disabled person or member of the disability community with interest in design, art, and accessibility, and who is not affiliated with an academic institution such as a university or college, you are welcome to apply for positions in the lab, including research assistantships. If you have a project in mind that would be a good fit for a partnership, please email me directly. We are in the process of building the new Critical Design Lab space, which will be open to community members for attending workshops and events.

Designers
Designers seeking mentorship in accessibility to build upon their professional training are welcome to email me for collaboration opportunities in the Critical Design Lab, with priority given to disabled designers. The Critical Design Lab website also has many resources that may be of interest to you, including design protocols, handbooks, and a podcast series.

Academic scholars
Scholars interested in working with Dr. Aimi Hamraie at York University (at the undergraduate, M.A., PhD or postdoctoral fellow phases of their careers) should contact them at ahamraie@yorku.ca. Dr. Hamraie mentors students and scholars who are a good fit for the Critical Design Lab. Please make sure that your inquiry addresses how your work fits into the lab. For graduate students, note that Dr. Hamraie has affiliations with Science and Technology Studies, Critical Disability Studies, and Gender, Feminist, and and Women's Studies at York.

If you are a potential postdoctoral fellow with interest in working in Critical Design Lab, you may consider applying for postdoctoral funding through SSHRC, Connected Minds at York, Mitacs (Global Link Research Award for international postdocs), and the York Provost’s postdoctoral fellowships for Black and Indigenous scholars.
